Rainbow Serpent is the culmination of a chance encouter on the streets of West Palm Beach one night in 1997.Jay Napoli,Joe Buglar and some friends were jamming downtown on Clematis Street when an already much older Tom Thurston walked up to a meeting of new friends who would soon form South Florida's only Sitar and Didjeridoo fusion band.Having been a former sitar player in the 70's and having studied with Vasant Rai,a student of the great Baba Allaudin Khan, the then bass player was thrilled to find out that Joe played the Indian Tabla's,accompaning drum for the sitar and was in fact borrowing his teachers Sitar.Later that week Tom got a chance to play the Sitar after almost 20 years. With Indian Music still fresh in his mind he rummaged through his belongings and found a notebook of all his lesson's with Vasant Rai.He soon bought a new Sitar and immursed himself in study.
Jay Napoli was still some what new to the Australian Didjeridoo but was a avid drummer playing Djembe,Conga and Doumbek.Using his rhytmic skills he quickly excelled on the Didj adding an indispensible sound to the group.Likewise Joe Buglar was still some what of a novice Tabla player but a skilled hand drummer incorporating everything into his playing. After alot of jamming together with hand drums and different instruments eventually the combination of the Didjeridoo along with the Sitar and tabla and hand drums proved to be a great sound. Rainbow Serpent was formed. The members being Tom Thurston on Sitar and Bass,Jay Napoli on Didjeridoo and Hand Percussion,Joe Buglar on Tabla and Percussion, and Anthony P. on Didjeridoo. The Band was active from 1997-2000 and still collaberate on various projects.A reunion CD is in the MAKING! ![]() The Original Rainbow Serpent |
